BIOGRAPHY:A recent performance by American Double of sonatas by Brahms and Franck was described by Denver’s Rocky Mountain News as displaying “the players' sumptuous tone and consistently tight ensemble work.” (Oct. 13, 2007). The violin-piano ensemble was founded in 2002 by two Yale graduates following their collaboration on a performance of Ezra Laderman’s Duo for Violin and Piano. Out of this experience emerged a vision to expand the scope of their repertoire with works by composers of American heritage. Besides working with Laderman, they also coached with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom in preparation for their CD release “The Bolcom Project”. It is the first recording of his complete works for violin and piano and Bolcom has praised it as “great benchmarks for other performers, but also great performances on their own merits”. Fanfare magazine “strongly recommended” the recording (May/June 2008) and Tempo has described it as “completely assured technically and brilliantly vivid musically” (April 2009). American Double has performed at Yale University’s prestigious contemporary music series New Music New Haven as well as at New York’s Steinway Hall in addition to concerts across the US and in Europe. In 2006, American Double presented the first complete cycle of Bolcom’s works for violin and piano with the composer personally introducing each work. They also performed his complete Sonatas in 2003 at the New England Conservatory. Their Hungarian (2004) tour was lauded by the Kiskunhalas Mirror as “collaboration of an unbelievably high degree”. A recent presentation to 1,500 school-age children from the stage of Boston Symphony Hall featured American Double in a co-presentation with William Bolcom on the eve of the premiere of his Eighth Symphony by James Levine and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. They have also presented to music classes at the Monroe School (Revere, MA), at a College Music Society National Conference, as well as at the Greenwood Music Camp (Easthampton, MA) and the Boston Latin school.
