Cloud Cult

I heard this music a few months ago and was instantly captivated. Their sound was coming from a totally different place. But then again, how would you capture the tone of a cloud?

“The instrumental arsenal of the Arcade Fire mixed with the gentle electronic throb of the Postal Service.” – Rolling Stone

Since 1995, Cloud Cult has been quietly crafting sprawling, cathartic albums. Building upon their individual revelations and discoveries, the members have explored concepts of love, lost love, healing, and the fine line between life and death.

Founder Craig Minowa wrote, recorded, and released the first Cloud Cult album The Shade Project in 1995 using the closet of his small Minneapolis apartment as his recording studio. Over the next 13 years, Cloud Cult released Who Killed Puck (2000), They Live on the Sun (2003), Aurora Borealis (2004), Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus (2005), The Meaning of 8 (2007), and Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-partying Through Tornadoes) (2008). In addition, what started out as a solo project in '95 has grown into a musical collective consisting of cellist Sarah Young, violinist Shannon Frid, painters Connie Minowa and Scott West, bassist Shawn Neary (formerly of Tapes N Tapes), and drummer Arlen Peiffer.

In April 2009, the band released, No One Said It Would Be Easy, an intimate, inside look into the origin and development of the ethereal and epic Cloud Cult. The film envelops viewers into the story and people behind Cloud Cult. Serving as both an introduction and introspection meant for newcomers to the music and fans of the band alike, the film explores the emotional and philosophical underpinnings on which Cloud Cult was founded and continues to operate, namely those of love and hope.

Thru Earthology Records, Cloud Cult has continued to remain independent, recording and releasing their albums on the not-for-profit environmental record label established by Minowa in 1998, despite numerous offers from major labels. As one of the pioneering “Green bands” of the modern indie-rock world, Cloud Cult has backed up their openhearted songs with green action for over a decade. All Cloud Cult products are 100% post consumer recycled or organic, and the label has served as an eco-consultant to a myriad of national acts, as well as industry giants like Universal and ASCAP.
