Audiology and Audiologist

Audiology is the science of hearing. Audiologists are individuals who hold a degree in audiology and are specialists in testing hearing and/or hearing loss. A certified audiologist will have the letters CCC-A or FAAA following his/her name.

Employing various testing strategies (e.g. hearing tests and otoacoustic emission measurements), audiology aims to determine whether someone can hear normally and if not, which portions of hearing (high, middle, or low frequencies) are affected. If a hearing deficit is present, an audiologist attempts to uncover the cause of the problem.

The Speech and Hearing Association

The American Speech-Language hearing Association is the only organization, which currently certifies audiologists, although the American Academy of Audiology may also certify audiologists in the future.

Hearing loss: When the auditory cortex of the brain does not receive input or stimulation, it results in hearing loss, wherein this part of the brain may start to lose cells and the ability to process sound. This is most common with more severe hearing losses, and cannot be reversed with hearing aids. Although this cell loss is worse in severe hearing loss, it is seen in all amounts of hearing loss and is caused by sensory deprivation.

Damage to the hair cells of the inner ear results in sensorineural hearing loss. When these hair cells are damaged, the ability to discriminate between sounds is also lost. This is likely to cause decreased ability to understand speech. In this case, amplifying speech (as a hearing aid does) does not always improve speech understanding.
