Ear Monitor
In the world of performance sound systems, monitors are nothing but speakers, except that they are smaller and configured in a manner where all background noise can be blocked out so you can hear only what you want. Ear monitors enable better mix quality and personal control of the mix volume. With more listening clarity performers can accurately tune their voices eliminating any vocal strain.
Monitor Types
Monitors enable a more natural overall sound. Monitors are the traditional wedge-shaped floor monitor with woofers for the low frequencies and tweeters or small horns for the higher frequencies, and the newer in-ear monitor mobile monitors. They serve the same basic purpose - to help the musicians, soloists, pastors or choir singers hear themselves while they're performing. Ear monitors are very useful to presenters and choir leaders, as they can receive off-stage cues during their presentation and can choose the mix they prefer to hear. In-ear monitor congregations benefit from lower volume levels and a clearer, more intelligible sound, ability to listen in stereo enabling lower listening levels by separating sounds spatially instead of purely by volume. There are three basic types of floor monitors: passive, active and powered. The differences between the three are the internal amplifiers and the electronics that control the speaker frequencies.
Passive Monitors: Basic monitors that rely on external amplification with multiple monitors running off the same amp. The name denotes a 'Passive' crossover which sends certain defined frequencies either to the woofer speaker or to the tweeter horn.
Active Monitors: The most advanced floor monitors which is bi-amped, wherein, the woofer and the tweeter speakers each are driven by a separate amplifier. Here the name denotes the crossover that is active.
Powered Monitors: A power monitor is a passive monitor with a built-in amplifier. Popular with small bands, powered monitors only require a signal from the mixing board and from an AC outlet. Ultimateears.com Ear Monitors
