Headphones

Headphones are an audio device designed to allow the listener to hear music or conversations without disturbing others. The standard connector is the headphone plug, or phone plug; and either stereo or mono. Headphones are devices that can be worn on the head with small speakers that fit over the ears (or sometimes into the ears as in-ear headphones). For headphones, the frequency range is the audible range of the headphones (ie the range from the lowest note to the highest note which the headphones can reproduce) measured in Hertz (Hz).

Headphones or Earphones?

Headphones are also known as earphones, stereophones, headsets, or by the slang term "cans" which are a pair of transducers that receive an electrical signal from a media player or receiver and use speakers placed in close proximity to the ears (hence the name earphone) to convert the signal into audible sound waves.

Earphones are devices that convert electrical energy into sound waves and are worn over or inserted into the ear (the conversion of electrical to acoustical signals). These convert electric signals, as from a telephone, stereo, or radio receiver, to audible sound and fit over or in the ear. These are also known as earpieces.

In other words, earphones are small loudspeakers held or worn close to the listener's ear or within the outer ear. Common forms include the hand-held telephone receiver; the headphone (q.v.), in which one or two earphones are held in place by a band worn over the head; and the plug earphone, which is inserted in the outer opening of the ear. Each establishes a well defined and repeatable acoustic environment.
